Art imitates life in novels dealing with addiction

dealing with addiction

The realities of the opiate detox experience and a Florida alcohol detox can come alive in the pages of a book

Whether you’re looking for help for someone you think could benefit from a stay in one of Florida’s drug rehab centers or are looking for an alcohol or drug detox treatment center in Florida for yourself, starting the conversation can be difficult. Talking about drug and alcohol addiction is important, though, so don’t give up.  The more we all talk about the problem – with our family, with our doctors, with trusted professionals who can help – the easier it will be for those dealing with addiction to speak up.

If you are concerned about a loved one whom you feel is abusing alcohol of drugs

The Addiction Resource Center says, “Start with a frank conversation expressing your concerns and offering support. If your loved one is willing to explore the issue, refer them to our ‘Get Help’ page where they can take an assessment and find resources. Offer to walk through the process with them.”

Please keep in mind that your loved one may not be receptive. “Sometimes an honest, frank conversation can prompt the path to recovery, but when it comes to [Substance Use Disorders], it can be difficult for people struggling to see or acknowledge the extent of harm their substance use is causing to themselves and to others,” the Addiction Resource Center explains.

You can’t force someone into recovery.  But there are things you can do. The Addiction Resource Center offers the following advice:

  • “Know that your support matters, and try to be patient–even if a loved one doesn’t  want to get help when you offer it, he or she will remember what you said and may be ready to engage in treatment at another time.”
  • “Try to respond to resistance with compassion and optimism–keeping in mind that your loved one may be feeling ashamed, afraid, hopeless, and isolated. When possible, continue to offer your support in finding help and reminders that addiction is treatable.”

If you are looking for help for your addiction

As the National Institute on Drug Abuse says, “Asking for help is the first important step.”  Whether you make use of a hotline, talk to your doctor or turn to family and friends for help, you can begin the journey to recovery by starting the conversation.  “It takes a lot of courage to seek help for a drug problem because there is a lot of hard work ahead. However, treatment can work, and people recover from addiction every day. Like other chronic diseases, addiction can be managed successfully. Treatment enables people to counteract addiction’s powerful, disruptive effects on brain and behavior and regain control of their lives.”

If you want to join the public debate

It’s also important to keep a public dialogue going.  You can add your voice to the debate regarding policies on the state and national level pertaining to the allocation of the resources needed to combat opioid addiction – so that opiate detox treatments won’t be needed by so many of your friends and neighbors.

Do a little research on the issue to find out where your representatives stand on the issues surrounding the national health crisis of opioid addiction.  You are in a unique position to educate your representatives – call them, write a letter or send an email asking them to stand with you and tell them why it’s so important to fight this battle on all fronts, from prevention through treatment and recovery.

And remember, as the Addiction Resource Center says, “There is hope. Neither you nor your loved one are alone.”
